Brachytherapy Services-

Brachytherapy is an advanced form of radiation therapy used to treat various types of cancer, including prostate, cervical, breast, and skin cancers. Unlike external beam radiation therapy, where radiation is delivered from outside the body, brachytherapy involves placing a radioactive source directly inside or near the tumor. This localized delivery of radiation ensures that a high dose of radiation is concentrated on the tumor while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissues.

There are two main types of brachytherapy:

  1. Interstitial Brachytherapy: This technique involves placing radioactive sources directly into the tumor or the tissue surrounding the tumor. It is commonly used for prostate cancer, head and neck cancers, and soft tissue tumors.

  1. Intracavitary Brachytherapy: In this type, radioactive sources are placed in body cavities, such as the cervix, uterus, or lungs. It is often used to treat cancers of the cervix, endometrium, and vagina.

Key Benefits of Brachytherapy:

  • Precise Radiation Delivery: Since the radiation source is placed near or within the tumor, it allows for highly targeted treatment, minimizing the exposure of healthy tissue.
  • Shorter Treatment Duration: Brachytherapy is often performed in fewer sessions compared to external radiation therapy, making it more convenient for patients.
  • Reduced Side Effects: The localized nature of treatment reduces the risk of long-term side effects commonly seen with traditional external radiation therapy.
  • Minimal Hospital Stay: Many types of brachytherapy are performed on an outpatient basis, meaning patients can return home on the same day.

Brachytherapy can be used in combination with other treatment modalities, such as surgery or chemotherapy, for a comprehensive approach to cancer management. It is tailored to each patient’s unique needs, ensuring optimal outcomes.
